Small glimpses of Hungary.
Hungary is a small country with a remarkably rich cultural heritage.
Music, traditions and landscapes often express something that words alone cannot.
From time to time I come across moments that capture a glimpse of this heritage.
This page is a small collection of such moments.
Hungarian folk dance is one of the most vivid expressions of the country’s living traditions.
Across Hungary, traditional dances have been preserved for centuries and are still performed today by dancers, students and cultural groups.
The flashmob below shows a spontaneous folk dance performance in Budapest, where traditional music and costumes bring a piece of Hungarian heritage into the heart of the city.
One of the most moving pieces of Hungarian choral music is the Evening Song by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály.
The text of the piece is based on a traditional Hungarian folk prayer, expressing the quiet hope of a traveler asking for peace and protection for the night.
The performance below took place at the Fisherman’s Bastion in Budapest, where singers unexpectedly gathered and began to sing together.
The result is a moment that many Hungarians instantly recognize as something deeply familiar.
Erdő mellett estvéledtem,
subám fejem alá tettem,
összetettem két kezemet,
úgy kértem jó Istenemet.
Én Istenem, adjál áldást,
már meguntam a járkálást,
a járkálást, a bujdosást,
az idegen földön lakást.
Adjon Isten jó éjszakát,
küldje hozzánk szent Angyalát,
bátorítsa szívünk álmát,
adjon Isten jó éjszakát.
Evening darkness overtook me near the woods;
I have put my coat under my head (i.e. as a pillow),
I have put my hands together
To pray to the Lord, like this:
Oh, my Lord, give me a place to sleep,
I am weary with wandering,
With walking around and hiding,
With living on foreign land.
May Lord give me a good night,
May he send me a holy angel,
May he encourage our hearts’ dreams,
May he give us a good night.
